Daniel Riordan in discussion with Swapnil Sharma.
Dr Daniel Riordan is a consultant psychiatrist, psychotherapist, group analyst and family therapy practitioner working with individuals, couples, groups, and organizations. He has been conducting reflective practice groups across Australia and the UK for decades.
Dr Swapnil Sharma is a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist working in both public and private practice. He is a BalintANZ Leader Trainer with a particular interest in the application of Balint Groups within institutional settings.

Becoming a Story Doctor: Lucy O’Hagan in conversation with Hamish Wilson
Lucy O’Hagan is a rata hauora/GP, writer and performer.
Her 2025 book Everything but the Medicine. A doctor’s tale published by Massey Press, was described as ‘stunning’ by Glenn Colqhoun. It explores the human stories heard by GPs and asks how doctors need to be, and to think, to become story doctors. Lucy reflects on crises from her own life including burnout.
Lucy has worked in a huge variety of places and practices. She teaches consultation skills and reflective practice to GP trainees and has been a keen Balint member over her career. She has studied the social science of medicine, narrative practice and kaitiakitanga, and writes a column for New Zealand Doctor.

Continuing the conversation… Shana O’Marra and Cathy Warburton in conversation about Balint groups for veterinarians
Dr Shana O’Marra is a veterinarian and Balint leader based in Washington, USA. She presented a paper at the 2024 International Balint Federation Congress in Boulder, Colorado about her experiences leading veterinary Balint groups. Following a very well-received first Weaving seminar in 2025, this year we invite Shana to continue her conversation with Cathy Warburton, Australian ex-veterinarian and Balint leader, and with the group.

Inclusion and Exclusion in Balint work – Timothy McMichael
Timothy is a senior practitioner, therapist, mediator, independent director, supervisor, Balint Group Leader and published researcher, with almost 40 years experience in his field of work. He is widely trained in his chosen profession having studied in the UK, in California and in recent years in his home country of Aotearoa New Zealand.
