I qualified as a social worker in the 1970s, and completed a Masters in Group Analytic Studies three decades later. I’ve practised in vocational rehab, individual and couple therapy, male family violence response and prevention, and mfv telephone counsellor training and supervision. I continue to run a small private counselling and s/v practice using a psychodynamic approach. Since attending the first Australian Intensive in 2007 I’ve lead / co-lead Balint groups consistently since about 2009. Currently leading / co-leading three groups, one for doctors (online) and two for mixed clinicians (ostensibly f2f). I’m also a facilitator of an innovative international group for leaders.

The first time I was in a Balint group I knew I had “Come home”. I continue to think and feel this.
Balint group participant – over 20 years.
Balint Intensive workshops – as participant 3 or 4

Balint Intensive workshops – as leader 3 or 4.
Balint leader since 2004, currently running five Balint groups, total cases led approximately 600.
Balint supervisor since about 2014
Balint observations about eight.
Balint supervision groups – other than as a leader at Intensive workshops, nil.
I think I am learning more about Balint work now than ever before, it continues to excite me and have a positive effect on many aspects of my work and life.

My early BG experience was with nurses who were working and training in a therapeutic community (the Cassel Hospital, London). There I also worked with child care workers, community psychiatric nurses, nurse tutors and multidisciplinary teams and various intensive workshops. In recent years in NZ, I have worked with psychotherapists psychologists and doctors in BGs and as a supervisor. I have benefitted from being a group member and co-leading with a variety of experienced BG leaders in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. I like to offer initial exploratory meeting(s) to consider together ‘fit’ and shared understandings and ways of working. I have been in practice as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist after training in London.

I am a Melbourne based psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist and I was the inaugural president of the Balint Society of Australia (later the Balint Society of Australia and New Zealand) when it was founded in 2005. My work has provided many opportunities for participants and prospective leaders to experience and learn about Balint work at a variety of conferences, stand-alone workshops, and the Society’s first intensives. I collaborated extensively with members of the International Balint Federation, undertook formal Balint leader training overseas and involved many senior international leaders in the Society’s development. I worked mentored, supported and supervised new Balint leaders. I have published a number of articles and papers about Balint work.

I have been leading Balint groups since 1998. Currently I work as a psychotherapist and Balint group leader, leading three ongoing multidisciplinary groups as well as regular groups for psychotherapy trainees. I serve on the Professional Development Committee of the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and co-ordinate a peer group for Balint Leader Trainers.

From the first day of my first Balint workshop 14 years ago I have found Balint groups to be energising and inspiring as a doctor participant, as a trainee leader, and then as a leader trainer. I enjoy supervising trainees. I live in New Zealand and I work online leading Balint groups in 2022 with members in both Australia and New Zealand.

I am a psychotherapist trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy which I have been practising for 20 plus years. To my work, I bring a deep understanding of the mind-body connection. My previous career as a physiotherapist helps inform this aspect of my work. I have been involved with Balint Group work and with BalintANZ for about 10 years. I was a founding member of a GP/ psychotherapist group that met monthly to discuss patient cases for around 10 years. I completed my Balint Accreditation several years ago. I am a long-time member of a Balint Group now lead by Di Nash and am co-lead of a long-term multi-disciplinary Balint Group with Renske van den Brink. I have attended and helped organise a number of Balint Intensives. For 4 years I was a member of the BalintANZ Board. At this point in my life I have a keen interest in helping foster Balint thinking and processing in a new generation of those showing an interest in Balint work. To this end I have become involved with the BOMS groups and about to co-lead an on-line group soon. Being a marker of the BalintANZ Medical Student Essays over the last 6 years has been both a delight and a privilege.
